One person was pronounced dead at the scene of a collision on Billy Graham Parkway at West Boulevard Friday afternoon. Three others were hurt in the collision involving a yard waste collection truck and a car.

The City of Charlotte issued a release on the incident several hours later. It says that at approximately 1:50 pm, a Solid Waste Services temporary driver was involved in an accident in the 3200 block of Billy Graham Parkway and West Boulevard.

The statement says that while making a right turn from Billy Graham onto West Boulevard, the driver lost control of the truck, striking a 4-door sedan with four people inside. The driver of the sedan died on the scene. The other three occupants were taken to area hospitals with life-threatening injuries.

Charlotte Fire Department Captain Rob Brisley says it took 48 firefighters nearly an hour and a half to remove the last person from the car. Witnesses told WBT the truck was on top of the car. Brisley says rescue crews had to use airbags and other hydraulic equipment to stabilize the truck, with a heavy wrecker finally called in to lift the truck high enough to remove the last victim from the car.

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department HITS unit will be conducting an investigation.

The Solid Waste Services truck involved in today's accident was a yard waste truck. There were three employees on the truck - the driver and two others to assist with yard waste collection. The driver was a temporary employee and not employed directly by the City of Charlotte. He has been working through the staffing agency for the City of Charlotte for 1 month.

The city statement says that this was the driver's first accident while operating a City vehicle, although he'd only been working for them for a month. The driver and one of the other workers went to local hospitals with non life-threatening injuries.
