Several creeks and rivers in the Charlotte-area are pushing their limits as the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida move out of the region.

However forecasters said the Piedmont would be hit with another round of heavy rain this afternoon.

A flood warning for small streams in central Mecklenburg and south-central Cabarrus Counties continues until 4:30 p.m.

Lincoln and Cleveland Counties are under flood warnings that are in effect through 5:15 p.m. A flood warning for Catawba County is in effect until 5:30 p.m.

The entire WBT listening area remains under a flash flood watch until Thursday morning. High wind warnings are also posted.

Forecasters said Mallard Creek in northern Mecklenburg and Buffalo Creek in Cabarrus were at particular risk of spilling over their banks.

By mid-afternoon, though, the National Weather Service said a gauge on Mallard Creek west of Harrisburg indicated the high waters were receding.

Rain gauges at Douglas Airport have picked up 2.75 inches of rain since early Tuesday morning.

A flood advisory for the South Fork Catawba River in Gaston County was also issued this morning. Forecasters were paying close attention to heavy runoff upstream, which they said could push the river to within a few inches of flood stage tonight.

The advisory said Fifth and Sixth Streets in Cramerton would be in the line of fire if the river were to flood.

In Charlotte, parts of North Tryon Street were closed for a period this morning because of downed powerlines and trees.

There were pockets of flooding in some low-lying, mostly rural areas. Morning commuters encountered some standing water on I-77 near Uptown.

So far there have been no reports of significant road flooding or any swift-water rescues.
