Charlotte, 11.06.2009

Facing possible removal from the bench by the North Carolina Supreme Court, Mecklenburg County Judge Bill Belk resigned late Friday afternoon.
Belk submitted his letter of resignation to the assistant for Chief District Court Judge Lisa Bell.
Belk has been under fire for allegations of willfull misconduct and the state's judicial standards commission had recommended Belk be removed from the bench.
The calls for his removal centered primarily on the fact that Belk remained on the board of Sonic Automotive ,which is in violation of state regulations, and he refused to resign. He also faced allegations of a verbal confrontation with Chief Judge Bell.
Governor Beverly Purdue must appoint a replacement, which could take several months.
