Attorneys brace for high court decision on Sanford ethics report
CHARLOTTE, 11.03.2009
CHRIS MILLER, WBT NEWS
A ruling on who sees an ethics report on South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is said to be looming.
Attorneys for the governor, the state House and the state Ethics Commission expect the state Supreme Court will reach a decision this week.
That ruling would be timed with the expected completion of the preliminary ethics report this week.
In the final volley of court filings Monday, Sanford's attorneys said the House failed to prove Sanford waived his right to keeping those findings confidential when he waived his right to keeping the investigation into him confidential.
The House has argued it should be allowed to see the findings because they could determine whether impeachment is warranted.
That preliminary report - basically an indictment against Sanford - would pave the way for an Ethics Commission ruling on whether Sanford broke any laws or violated ethics rules.
It's possible the court will decline to get involved, which would allow the House to get its hands on the ethics report.
