North Carolina officials know some of the mountains of trash that are dumped daily could be useful to someone, if only interested parties could find each other.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported Monday that the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources has launched a new Web site to help businesses cut costs and recycle useful items.

The state established an online exchange for trading biomass materials like vegetable oil, restaurant grease, wood waste, manure, food waste and forest products. Biomass is increasingly used to produce alternative fuels.

The Web site is a spin-off of an earlier state-created trading site that helped businesses look for users for waste items like steel drums, leftover hardwood flooring and computer equipment.
