Mandatory water limits lifted in Mecklenburg
CHARLOTTE, 04.07.2009
CHRIS MILLER, WBT NEWS
Just in time for lawn-watering season, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities today lifted the nearly two-year-old mandatory water restrictions.
The limits were put in place in August 2007, when a blazing summer and a lengthy drought drained the area's water supplies at an alarming rate.
The Utilities Department said customers continued to conserve as drought conditions eased.
"Our customers water use habits realy have changed and they're smarter about the choices they make," said Maeneen Klein, the Utilities Department's Water Conservation Manager.
Recent rains also helped, but federal drought monitors still had Mecklenburg County as "abnormally dry." Forecasters said the Charlotte-area's rainfall totals for the year were still two-inches below normal.
Water restrictions had eased along with the drought. Recently, the department allowed twice-weekly outdoor watering.
