Despite the grim economic news for the Charlotte region, Mecklenburg County Commission chair Jennifer Roberts is striking an optimistic tone in her State of the County address.
"We're gonna pull through before the rest of the country does," Roberts said Friday.
The theme of her nearly hour-long address was "pulling together to pull through."
"We will make it through this recession because in tough times, we pull together to pull through," Roberts said.
Roberts pointed to encouraging signs ahead for the county, including last week's announcement GMAC plans to expand its Charlotte operations.
But like the weather, she said, there are still some rain clouds out there. Applications for food stamps are up nearly 40 percent, and the region's unemployment rate is higher than the nation's.
Roberts said the county is doing its best to cope with the recession without raising taxes.
