More Mecklenburg County jail space is ready for occupancy

Construction is now complete on a new jail annex that can hold an additional 300 inmates. The job was finished sooner than expected.
Deputies say the Mecklenburg County Jail-North Annex will make a big impact on the overcrowding issue in the county. They say the new facility will help the guards out too, because they won’t have to watch 20-30 extra inmates. With the new space the inmates will be spread-out so too many are not confined to one area of the jail.
An opening date for the center has not yet been set.
