A federal grand jury has indicted 21 people, including two South Carolina brothers, on charges they participated in an illegal video gambling operation in 15 counties in western North Carolina.
The indictment, returned Thursday and unsealed Friday, also accuses some of the 21 of bribing two Buncombe County sheriff's deputies and of lying to the grand jury.
The indictment names brothers James Otis Henderson, 42, of Inman, S.C., and Barron Sloan Henderson, 43, of Lyman, S.C., as using their business, Henderson Amusement Inc., to lead the operation. The U.S. Attorney's Office says the operation began in October 2000, taking in more than $5 million.
On July 1, video gambling became illegal in North Carolina. Previously, operators had been allowed up to three machines that paid winners up to $10 in store merchandise.
All the defendants are charged with conspiracy to conduct an illegal gambling business.
Some also face other charges, including bribery, witness tampering and perjury.
