Hometown Hero for August 27, 2010 is Jason Watson of Charlotte, NC
Jason Watson is the owner of Dublin Dog and the founder for the Dublin Dog Foundation, an organization that is providing free service dogs for injured war veterans. This year, the Dublin Dog Foundation raised over $2,000 at their annual Comedy benefit in August, to provide a service dog to an injured military war veteran.  The service dogs will be awarded to the Veterans on Veterans Day this year.  The Charlotte non-profit raises money for Freedom Service Dogs and the philanthropic campaign, called “Operation Canine Comrades,” trains and cares for a service dog (including medical bills and food), ...

Hometown Hero for August 20, 2010 is Sara Sellers of Charlotte, NC
Sara has been a tireless volunteer in our community for over 15 years. She has been active in her church, Sardis Presbyterian, by helping out with Room in the In and Friendship Trays. She was previously a teacher and now enjoys tutoring elementary school children at Rama Road, helping them master their reading skills. Sara was a member of the Women’s Science Guild at Discovery Place and helped raise money for education programs and exhibits at the museum. Hometown Hero for August 13, 2010 is Corey Gaitan of Gastonia, NC
Two weeks ago Corey, a Rock Hill Utilities worker, was stopped for a break at a local convenience store. While his co-worker went into the store, Corey witnessed a young, blonde-haired girl choking. Her mother was trying to do the Heimlich maneuver and giving her daughter water. Corey picked up the little girl, positioned her with her head down and back towards him and slapped her between the shoulder blades several times. Then he heard something hit the ground. Hometown Hero for August 6, 2010 is Michelle Armstrong of Dallas, NC
Two weeks ago, a drunk driver who had three previous DWI charges hit and killed Michelle’s only daughter. Michelle, almost instantly, felt the need to talk about her story and her desire to change the judicial system. Michelle wants to make something positive out of her tragedy. She wants to bring change to the laws regarding previously convicted drunk drivers. Hometown Hero for July 30, 2010 is Cathy Sheafor of Charlotte, NC
Cathy Sheafor is a former Justice Department lawyer and Duke University law professor. She has been working with disadvantaged girls since she was a college student; serving as a Big Sister and coaching a girl’s swim team. For years, Cathy dreamed of giving girls from low-income homes the same opportunities she and her daughters had in school. Last year she began conceptualizing a middle school where girls would be challenged to reach for the stars. Hometown Hero for July 23 is Dr. William Conner of Charlotte, NC
Dr. Conner is a native Charlottean and a caring father of three.  He has been volunteering in a number of ways for the people affected by the earthquake in Haiti.  He was able to gather medical supplies from local hospitals along with medications.  He was onsite at a hospital in Haiti only a few days after the quake devastated the area.  He has plans to return in August as well as October with his wife to paint, build a playground and help renovate part of an orphanage.   Dr. Conner has also organized a non-profit group that, ...

Hometown Hero for July 16, 2010 is Cheryle Keller of Charlotte, NC
When you think of a true Hometown Hero who makes a difference in our community and affects so many lives, it’s impossible to ignore Cheryl Keller. Cheryl’s volunteer work spans two decades with Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont (based in Charlotte) and includes a number of roles over the years. In fact, the South Charlotte resident is getting a national award (the 2010 Elsine Katz Volunteer Leader of the Year Award) from Goodwill Industries International later this month in Washington state. This comes after she was honored in May with a regional Goodwill Volunteer of the Year award.   ...

Hometown Hero for July 9, 2010 is Drew Ryan of Charlotte, NC
In 2005, Drew’s mom passed away from melanoma. After his loss, rising senior Drew, organized a paintball fundraiser called “Shoot-Out for Skin Cancer.” Each fall and spring students from Charlotte Catholic High School use a teacher workday to participate in the event. Seven Shoots-Outs have been held, with over $14,000 going to the Blumenthal Cancer Center. While running the events, Drew created a small tabletop display about skin cancer prevention, geared towards kids his age. The event is now in its third year. Although Amy has been dealing with APlastic Anemia, she is a walking wonder. She continues to work for AAA Car Buying service as a driver. She is currently in remission and also cares for her 2 children, Kelsey and Zack. Because of high medical bills, she works to make money for her family. Hometown Hero for June 25, 2010 is Keith Dickson of Charlotte, NC
Keith maintains lawns as his business and career. He is passionate about his business and cares very much about his customers.  He goes out of his way to make sure his customers are happy with their lawns and satisfied with his product.  Last year, he approached a customer about using organic amendments to help with that customer’s allergic reactions.  That customer did not believe that organic material would help the lawn and help his family. Hometown Hero for June 18, 2010 is Dr. Ronal King of Rock Hill, SC
Dr. King runs an organization called “Feed The Hungry" in Rock Hill, SC. He not only makes sure that people have food, but also kerosene during the cold winter months, jackets, blankets, and clothing. He works tirelessly for those in need. Every Thanksgiving, he will work for weeks, seeking turkey donations. He and a few volunteers stay up all night cooking meals for those who would otherwise have no Thanksgiving meal. Hometown Hero for June 11, 2010 is Sharon Grammer of Charlotte, NC
In December of 2008 Sharon was diagnosed with stage 4 peritoneal cancer.  Fortunately, she fought it and beat it, but what makes her worthy of being a hometown hero is what she did after winning her battle with cancer. After a surgery, she received a sunshine box" from some friends, which contained quite a few small, wrapped gifts.  She was instructed to open one each day she needed a little sunshine in her life.  This meant a lot to her, so once she recovered, she decided to "pay it forward" by starting a non-profit organization called "Fighting Cancer, Inc." Hometown Hero for May 28, 2010 is Jackie McFadden of Rock Hill, SC.
Jackie is a Government Documents Librarian at Winthrop University. She is heavily involved in getting the Carolina Marsh Tacky designated as the South Carolina State horse. The Marsh Tacky is similar to the Outer Banks Ponies of North Carolina. The Marsh Tacky is only found in the lower parts of South Carolina. The herds have dwindled to less than 200. Jackie has joined with member of the Carolina Marsh Tacky Association to establish this rare breed of horse, a piece of South Carolina's history, as the SC State Horse. Hometown Hero for May 14, 2010 is Matt Templeton of Statesville, NC.
In August 2008 Matt's three year old daughter, Lindsay, was diagnosed with AML, a rare and aggressive form of leukemia.  After a long hard year, Matt’s daughter became cancer free and is in remission.  His journey with his daughter inspired Matt to help others. He committed to raise money for children's cancer research through St. Baldricks Foundation, who raise money by challenging the fund raisers to shave their head in solidarity with the 1000s of children that lose their hair to chemo. Hometown Hero for May 7, 2010 is Jay Schultz of Stallings, NC.
Last summer, a man lost control of his motorcycle, causing it to slide off a 20 foot steep rocky embankment and into a boulder filled stream; hitting his head and cracking his helmet on a rock.  The man lay face down in the water unconscious and not breathing. If not for the quick and unselfish acts of fellow rider, Jay Schultz, things would have definitely been far worse. Jay made it to the bottom in about a second and a half, engaged Rob and stayed supporting Rob’s head and keeping it from the water until the EMT’s arrived.  ...
