While September Panthers football is about Cam Newton, DeAngelo Williams and Luke Kuechly....August football is more about guys like Marvin McNutt, Brenton Bersin and Joe Webb. In other words, backup players looking to secure a spot on the final 53-man roster. Barring injuries, usually about four or five positions at the most are actually up for grabs in the preseason and at training camp.
Over the past few years, the Panthers have chosen to save an active roster spot for another position by carrying just two quarterbacks. However, that could change this year with the addition of Joe Webb. Webb was brought in to initially take the load off Cam Newton while he recovers from ankle surgery. Webb did a lot of the work in the spring OTA's and continues to run play packages like the read-option for Cam at training camp.
Webb spent four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. The first three were at quarterback before being shifted to wide receiver last season. As you can hear in my interview with Webb, he jumped at the chance to go to another team and play QB once again.
