AK is OK at the College World Series

South Charlotte and Ardrey Kell High School in particular have been well represented at the College World Series with both North Carolina and NC State having a pair of former Knights on the roster.  We have put four kids through school there so I have gotten to know Coach Hal Bagwell who has continued the magic he had at South Meck previously.  Freshman pitcher Trent Thornton is pictured above and is joined by high school teammate Chris McCue for the Tar Heels.  NC State has another freshman pitcher Brad Stone and second baseman Logan Ratledge playing big roles in their terrific season.  Another former AK pitcher Alex Wood is up with the Atlanta Braves and just made his first big league start this week.

Also on the UNC team are Brian Holberton from Myers Park and Michael Massardo from Latin.  NC State has a pair of players from Providence in Jake Fincher and Brett Austin, and also Chris Overman from Myers Park.

Speaking of baseball, I had the chance to put a check mark on the bucket list by seeing a game at Fenway Park over Memorial Day weekend.  A lot of things in this world don't live up to the hype, but seeing a Red Sox game at Fenway is something any avid baseball fan should do if they can.  My Cleveland Indians accomodated the faithful with a late bullpen collapse in that particular game.

I've broadcast every Panthers game for 18 years and for many years worked every single Hornets game, which was about 100 per season with preseason and post-season.  And while I have called a number of baseball games in the past, it is one of the few sports where I don't feel like I am at work.  Kudos to those announcers who can call 200 baseball games a season, I don't have the attention span for that.
